Joint Pain was created to help people with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and related disorders learn about treatments to ease symptoms and help them lead a more comfortable life.

There are natural treatments for joint pain that can have significant benefits, and more and more people are choosing safer alternatives to treat joint pain due to arthritis.

Pain Relief for Osteoarthritis

Although there is no cure for this debilitating disease, fortunately there is pain relief for osteoarthritis sufferers. Depending on the severity of your condition and the amount of joint damage, there are several options available to help treat this painful condition.

Before we get into prescription and natural treatments, let's discuss a few lifestyle changes that may offer pain relief for osteoarthritis as well as rheumatoid arthritis:

1) Exercise. Most health experts agree that regular exercise can be effective in helping alleviate arthritis pain. Stretching your muscles as well as building up muscular strength will lead to not only stronger joints but alleviate stress on them as well. Your doctor will be able to determine what exercises will help with your particular condition.

2) Lifestyle Changes. Avoid doing activities that put added stress on the affected joints, be it your fingers, knees, back or hip. If it is absolutely necessary to perform tasks that tax arthritic joints, make sure you rest often to relieve joints before starting up again.

3) Heat & Cold Therapy. Alternating heating pads and ice packs can provide significant pain relief for osteoarthritis, much the same way it helps athletes and those with injuries. Both can help soothe joint pain and stiffness.

For moderate or severe conditions, oftentimes the self-treatment options above do not provide enough relief. For these arthritis sufferers there are several options.

The first option is an over-the-counter pain reliever such as Tylenol, Advil or NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) such as Aleve. However, these non-prescription drugs often do not provide enough pain relief for osteoarthritis.

The second option is a prescription NSAID such a Vioxx or Celebrex, which are stronger anti-inflammatories than the OTC drugs. However, although they can provide significant relief, these drugs have received a lot of negative press these days due to significant side effects. The most popular NSAID, Vioxx, was actually pulled off the market in 2004 due to increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

The last option is becoming more and more popular, especially with all of the controversy surrounding prescription arthritis drugs. Natural remedies, including glucosamine, chondroitin, MSM and other nutrients have shown much promise in providing pain relief for osteoarthritis. As such, many people have used these natural treatments with much success, and without the side effects of pharmaceutical arthritis medications.
